The Man Who Loved Children has now haunted me for nearly a year. The perfection of violence, of beatings, and chaos within the life of children depicted, second only to Stead's sentences, has made it impossible to write similar violence with out the stamp of Stead. Remarkable novel by one of the finest sentence writers.
